LAW PAC

Following a long tradition started 50 years ago by Howard Young, ITLA has an effective and respected governmental affairs program.  LAW PAC was established in 1979 and Howard Young was the first Chair of the LAW PAC Trustees.  LAW PAC continues to be the strong political action arm of the Association, committed to nonpartisan support of candidates for the Indiana House and Senate who support open access to the courts.  Management and distribution of LAW PAC funds is under the exclusive control of the LAW PAC Trustees.  There are nine trustees, and they serve five-year terms.

What is LAW-PAC?

LAW-PAC is a bi-partisan political action committee established by The Indiana Trial Lawyers Association. LAW-PAC is the only PAC in Indiana whose goal is to elect state legislators officials who support the civil justice system.

LAW-PAC has been working on behalf of ITLA members for more than 45 years. In doing so it has become one of the most effective and respected PACs in Indiana.

LAW-PAC works on behalf of you and your clients to ensure that candidates who support the goals of ITLA have the resources and tools to be elected and re-elected. LAW-PAC also ensures that candidates know and understand the issues that are of concern to ITLA members and their clients.

I already contribute to the candidate(s) of my choice. Why do I need LAW-PAC?

Individual contributions to candidates are important, but they cannot compete with the contributions of big business, health care interests, or the insurance industry--all of which have their own PACs.

When we cumulate contributions from members through LAW- PAC, we are able to make substantial contributions to strategically targeted races. LAW-PAC can therefore have a greater impact on races important to trial lawyers and tort victims than any individual contribution.

Where does the money that I contribute go?

LAW- PAC supports Indiana legislative candidates both Democrat and Republican.

Who decides which candidates receive LAW-PAC support?

Contributions to candidates are based on the approval of the 9 trustees of LAW-PAC. Decisions on individual candidates are based on their support of the civil justice system. Criteria include voting records, committee assignments, and electability.

How may I contribute?

LAW-PAC utilizes two methods of collection:

  1. Charge your contribution to your Visa, Mastercard or American Express account. Billing will occur on a monthly or yearly basis.
  2. Annual invoicing.

What happens if I decide to cancel my contributions?

Your LAW-PAC commitment is revocable at will. A call to the ITLA office will terminate your participation.

Why join LAW-PAC now?

Every year the safety of Indiana families is put in jeopardy as the medical, insurance and business interests of this state unite to try to strip away the protections the civil justice system affords injured people. It is vitally important that every trial attorney in Indiana join this courageous effort to protect the safety and well-being of Indiana’s citizens.

Consider how your clients and their families would be impacted if those that strive to put profit before safety are successful. Consider what would be left of the civil justice system if ITLA & LAW-PAC were not there to help defend the vital protections our civil justice system provides.

While many clients will never know how their safety is put at risk each year, it is critically important that the trial lawyers who represent them know what is at stake and do their part to protect and defend the safety of their clients.
